“Legacy is not what you leave for people. It’s what you leave in people.”
Legacy is something most leaders think about, especially in parks where the work feels meaningful and lasting. It’s easy to believe your legacy will be the projects you complete or the improvements you leave behind. But that’s not how it works.
Phil Gaines shared a perspective about legacy that is important to acknowledge. You don’t get to pick it. Other people do.
That means the things you expect to define your career often aren’t what people remember. Buildings change. Programs evolve. Signs get replaced. Even things that were major accomplishments can fade over time. What doesn’t fade is how you made people feel and how you influenced them.
Legacy is not what you leave for people. It’s what you leave in people.
That shows up in ways you may never see. A conversation you had with someone that changed how they lead. There was probably a moment when you showed trust to someone that had never had that from a leader. Decisions you’ve made have helped someone grow. At its best, your impact happens without your knowledge.
That can feel unsettling at first. Leaders are used to setting goals, measuring outcomes, and tracking progress. Legacy doesn’t work that way though. It’s built through everyday interactions, not just big milestones.
It also means leadership requires consistency. Not everyone will agree with your decisions and everyone will like you. That comes with the role. What matters is staying grounded in your purpose and leading in a way that reflects your values.
If you’re early in your career, this is where it starts. Not later. Not when you reach a certain title. Every interaction contributes to how people will remember you.
The simplest way to understand legacy is this: it’s the stories people tell about you when you’re not in the room. Focus on those stories.
